Wisdom tooth extraction is a common surgical procedure that many people undergo.
However, most people are unaware of whether they will need this procedure or not until their wisdom teeth begin to erupt. Furthermore, some of the signs that you may need your wisdom teeth extracted can be misread by patients.
Signs of wisdom teeth eruption include:
- Pain – ranging from a dull ache to chronic intense pain.
- Redness and inflammation around the wisdom tooth.
- Swelling surrounding areas
- Bad breath
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Pain or difficulty opening your mouth and swallowing
You may also be able to see your wisdom teeth erupting through your gum, however, this is not always the case. In some cases, you may have no symptoms at all.
Wisdom teeth tend to grow and erupt much later in life than other teeth. Usually, you will notice some movement of your wisdom teeth in early adulthood, but this can vary. As your wisdom teeth grow, if there is not enough room, you may experience discomfort, infection, or overcrowding. In these instances, your dentist will likely recommend the removal of some or all of your wisdom teeth.
It is important that you see your dentist as soon as you feel any discomfort. If your wisdom teeth are unable to erupt cleanly – as is often the case – then you can end up with severe gum infection, tooth decay, damage to the surrounding teeth or cheek, as well as jaw cysts. The latter is very painful and dangerous.
Wisdom teeth extractions can be performed under local or general anaesthetic depending on the complexity of the operation and preference of the patient. In extreme cases, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon. The extraction can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.
It is important to speak with your dentist prior to your extraction about after-care as you will likely need to arrange transport to and from the surgery as well as some recovery time away from work or school.
